Our Story

Who we are

For more than 30 years, THONEH has built a strong reputation as a centre of excellence providing quality specialised eye healthcare with expertise in a comprehensive range of sub-specialties and using the latest technology to offer the most advanced medical treatments in its field. In addition, it is to date the only eye healthcare focused specialist hospital in Malaysia under the purview of the Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB).

THONEH’s facilities are located in a six-storey tower block and a five-storey podium block at Lorong Utara (B) Petaling Jaya. Within this infrastructure there are,

  • Three floors of outpatient clinics
  • A 40-bedded inpatient ward
  • Four operating theatres
  • A day recovery area
  • The National Institute of Ophthalmic Sciences (NIOS) faculty
  • Diagnostic centres
  • The eye bank
  • A laser centre
  • A cornea and refractive surgery centre
  • An auditorium

These facilities enhance THONEH’s ability to offer better and up-to-date treatments and solutions comfortably.

1984

  • Laying of foundation stone by DYMM Sultan of Selangor and commencement of construction

1986

  • Launching of Hospital Services by YAB Tun Hussein Onn

1987

  • Official Opening Ceremony by DYMM Sultan of Selangor

1988

  • Ramakrishna Panikar, THONEH Council member, becomes the first corneal donor in Malaysia

1990

  • THONEH organizes Berkeley Course on Radial Keratotomy

1994

  • Annual Microsurgery Course organised by THONEH & SNEC

1996

  • THONEH receives “National” status
  • Establishemnt of National Eye Bank

1997

  • THONEH becomes the first in Malaysia to introduce Electro Diagnostic System linked to Bristol Eye Hospital
  • Launching of the “I Care Vision 2020” Mobile Eye Clinic with Yayasan Pandidikan Islam officiated by Datin Seri Dr. Wan Azizah

1998

  • THONEH organized the First International Teleconference in Ophthalmology, linking USA, UK, Greece, and Malaysia
  • First batch of Post-Graduate in Ophthalmology joined THONEH for training
  • Mobile Eye Clinic donated by Petronas, the first of its kind in Malaysia, was fabricated locally to fulfill THONEH’s corporate social responsibility

  • HRM Queen Elizabeth II of England visits THONEH’s Mobile Eye Clinic during the KL Commonwealth Games

1999

  • Laying of foundation stone for National Institute of Ophthalmic Sciences building by DYMM Sultan of Selangor, Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Al-Haj
  • Official launch of “I Care Vision 2020” Mobile Eye Clinic by YB Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, then Deputy Prime Minister

  • New Millenium

 

2000

  • Mobile Eye Operating Theatre, donated by Petronas, commenced its service as part of THONEH’s CSR activities

2001

  • Launching of LASIK Centre officiated by Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Siti Aishah

  • Family clinic for the visually impaired was setup at Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB) Complex

2004

  • THONEH co-founded ASEAN Association of Eye Hospital (AAEH)

  • Aqualase Catarac Surgery was performed for the time in Malaysia and was broadcasted live to Asia Pacific Association of Ophthalmology (APAO) Congress in Sunway Convention Centre
  • THONEH organised visit by ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital to Subang’s Airport

2005

  • Commencement of Satellite Community Service Clinic in Kota Bharu

2006

  • Becoming a member of European Association of Eye Hospitals (EAEH)
  • First ever keratoprosthesis procedure in Malaysia was done in THONEH

2007

  • Completion of NIOS building
  • International Conference on Small Incision Cataract Surgery
  • Chairman of THONEH, Ybhg Allahyarham Prof. Datuk. Dr. Ismail Md. Salleh became the first disabled person to be appointed as Senator
  • THONEH co-founded World Assoiation of Eye Hospital (WAEH)

2008

  • International Conference on Vitreo Retinal Surgery Course
  • Launching of Bachelor of Optometry Programme with BITS Pilani

2009

  • Brandlaureatte SMEs Chapter Award 2009 and the Best Brands Healthcare Eye Hospital by the Asia Pacific Brand Foundation (APBF)

  • First Neuro Ophthalmology Symposium

 

 

2010

  • Satellite Clinic at Global Doctors Specialist Centre

  • THONEH becomes an elite partner of Malaysian Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC)
  • Malaysia Health Tourism Award presented by Datuk Seri Dr. Liow Tiong Lai, then Health Minister of Malaysia

2011

  • Received ISO certification

2012

  • Establishment of satellite clinic in Rawang, Selangor

2013

  • Mobile Eye Screening and on-site cataract surgery using the mobile operation theatre in Slim River & Bentong, both officiated by YB Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, then Minister of Health

2014

  • THONEH achieves JCI Accreditation

2016

  • THONEH established THONEH Foundation to expand the hospital’s community welfare services capabilities and reach
  • 2017
    • THONEH re-accredited by JCI

2018

  • 32nd Anniversary of The Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital international Meeting in Conjunction with World Sight Day 2018, ASEAN Association of Eye Hospitals, Tun Hussein Onn Oration, and Keshmahinder Singh Award for Prevention of Blindness with Gala Dinner Officated by YB Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad
