What is cataract?

  • A cataract is the clouding or loss of transparency of the natural lens of the eye.
  • This condition causes vision to become blurred or dim because light cannot pass through the clouded lens to the back of the eye.

What causes cataract?

Some of the conditions or factors that cause cataract are:

  • Ageing
  • Long-term use of steroid medications
  • Previous eye injury or inflammation
  • Certain medical conditions such as diabetes
  • Excessive exposure to sunlight
  • Congenital cataract (present at birth)

What are the symptoms and signs of cataract?

The symptoms and signs of cataract occur due to the clouding of the lens in the eye. 

In addition to the dimness of vision, other symptoms are:

  • Poor night vision
  • Sensitivity to bright lights or glare
  • Appearance of “halos” around light sources
  • Frequent changes in spectacles or contact lens prescription
  • Difficulty reading small print
  • Double vision in a single eye

 How is cataract treated?

  • The only treatment for cataract is surgery.
  • Modern cataract surgery is called phacoemulsification. This procedure uses advance ultrasonic energy to remove the cataract through a small wound that needs no suturing inmost cases. An artificial lens in inserted during cataract surgery to improve patients’ vision after the surgery. Patients will have options to choose monofocal lens, a toric lens to reduce pre-existing astigmatism or mulifocal lens to be glasses-free after the surgery.
