1984 to 1989
1984 – The foundation stone the nation’s first eye hospital was laid by Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Al Haj ibni Hisamuddin Alam Shah Al-Haj of Selangor. Construction began with Tun Hussein Onn as the Founding Chairman, and Datuk Keshmahinder Singh as the first Medical Director.
1986 – The Hospital’s services were launched by Tun Hussein Onn
1987 –The eye hospital was officially opened by Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Al Haj ibni Hisamuddin Alam Shah Al-Haj of Selangor1988 -The sub-speciality clinics were established
1990 – 1995
1990 – The Berkeley Course on Radial Keratotomy by Eminent International Refractive Surgeons was held in the hospital
1994 – The Annual Microsurgery Course was jointly organised by the Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital and Singapore National Eye Centre
1996 – 2001
1996 – The National Eye Bank was established, and the hospital achieved its “National” status and was renamed the Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital (THONEH)
1997 – THONEH introduced the Electro Diagnostic System (ATEL) linked to the Bristor Eye Hospital to Malaysia
1998 – THONEH participated in the first International Teleconference in Ophthalmology, which links opthalmologists from USA, UK, Greece and Malaysia. The first Mobile Eye clinic was fabricated to fulfil THONEH’s social responsibility
1999 – The foundation stone for the National Institute of Ophthalmology building was placed by the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Al-Haj ibni Hisamuddin Alam Shah Al-Haj of Selangor
2000 – The Mobile Eye Operating Theatre commenced its services by carrying out complimentary eye surgery to fulfil THONEH’s social responsibility
2001 – THONEH launched the Frontier Lasik Centre. It also set up the Family Clinic at the Malaysian Association for the Blind Complex, which provides complimentary services to visually impaired persons and their immediate family.
2002 – 2007
2004 – THONEH became a founding Member of the ASEAN Association of Eye Hospitals. The Aqualase Cataract Surgery was performed in Malaysia for the first time (and transmitted live to the APAO Congress in the Sunway Convention Centre).
2005 – THONEH established the Satellite Community Service Clinic in Kota Bahru, Kelantan, to screen patients in all districts in Kelantan. It also followed up with visits by the Mobile Eye Clinic to further screening activities and perform corrective surgery.
2006 – THONEH joined European Association of Eye Hospitals as a member. The hospital also performed the first Keratoprosthesis procedure in Malaysia.
2007 –The National Institute of Ophthalmology Building was completed
2008 – 2016
2008 – The Bachelor of Science in Optometry degree program was launched with Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani, India2008 – The ISO 9001:2008 certified accreditation was obtained from UKAS, CONFRAC and Standards Malaysia
2009 – THONEH received the Brandlaureate, BestBrands Healthcare Eye Hospital – SMEs Chapter Award by the Asia Pacific Brand Foundation (APBF)
2010 – THONEH’s Satellite Clinic commenced operations at the Global Doctors Specialist Centre. The hospital also received the Malaysia Health Tourism Award by the Ministry of Health.
2014 – THONEH attained Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation, an international mark and endorsement for quality patient care and patient safety. It also introduced the LenSx Femtosecond Laser Cataract Surgery
2015 –THONEH introduced the Vitreolysis YAG Laser in Malaysia
2016 – THONEH celebrated its 30th Anniversary
