Certificate in Ophthalmic Technician

1. Aim
The program aims to produce well trained Ophthalmic Technicians to assists ophthalmologist in providing quality care for ophthalmic patients in the hospital and the community at large.
2. Program Overview
The program is planned and implemented on the concepts of concurrent teaching with theoretical input followed by clinical experience in the respective areas of outpatient department, ward and operation theater and community services.
Theoretical knowledge includes:
- Basic anatomy and physiology of the body, with special emphasis on the eye
- Basic ophthalmology
- Microbiology and principals and techniques of asepsis
- Fundamentals of patient care.
3. Entry Requirement
- SPM with 2 credits in Bahasa Malaysia and one other subject in Science or Mathematics
- Any other equivalent qualification

Course structure
“2 YEAR CERTIFICATE LEVEL PROGRAMME”
Year One
In the first year, trainee will acquire:-
- Knowledge, skills and interpersonal behaviours required in:
- Obtaining general medical and ophthalmic history from patient
- Performing basic eye examination and eye care.
- Providing outpatient car in areas of ophthalmologist clinics, treatment room and specialty areas
- Giving health teaching to patients and the public
- Caring for patients before and after eye surgery
Year Two
In the second year, trainees are taught:
Knowledge and competencies in:-
- Caring for patients in the operation theatre
- Handling and maintaining ophthalmic surgical equipments and instruments
- Assisting in eye surgeries
- Performing assessments for low vision persons
- Instructing low vision persons in the use of low vision aids
